Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) are, in my opinion, ridiculously adorable. Contrary to popular belief, Sperm Whales are not named after their sperm, but the spermaceti found in their heads. Let me elaborate.. Spermaceti is not any type of fluid having to do with reproduction, but rather a wax present in the head cavaties of these cetaceans. It was really popular for candles and other various things back in the 18th and 19th century, when the whaling industry was booming. Although, who would want to kill these beautiful whales? Considering they could grow up to 67 feet (20.5 m), and have huge teeth weighing up to 2.2 lb ( 1 kg) each.. It’s someone with a lot of balls and little to no heart. I say this because they are pod animals, females usually living with their young and males in ‘bachelor’ groups for quite a lengthy time. That’s like tearing apart a grandma, or child, from a family that’s lived together since..Well, forever really. They really have a nice pod mentality though, working 1-2 hour intervals searching for food such as the colossal squid, demersal rays, and other cephalopods / elasmobranchs. Even the megamouth is on their menu. So they’ve got up to (and sometimes even over) 70 years to get their fair share of delicious meals. I guess you can’t blame the guys in Moby Dick for being intimidated by such a ‘fearsome’ beast.
